When you serve the community you:

  • Feel good.
  • Get a sense of accomplishment.
  • Learn something new.
  • Gain leadership skills.
  • Make new friends.
  • Build team skills
  • Impact on an organization or group.
  • Get real world experience.
  • Enjoy helping people.
  • Enhance your resume.
  • Get to know the community.
  • Explore careers.
  • Have fun.
  • Identify an organization you want to join.

People serve for many reasons, especially to help others. But it's also OK to get some benefits for yourself when you serve the community. You can learn skills that you can't learn in school, make new friends, and learn more about our society.

Instead of considering service as something you do for people not as fortunate as yourself, think of it as an exchange. Serving also includes "self-help". So even if you are working for nothing, there is pay back. You get more on the job experience. And you may find out that you like that field. Serving the community is a win/win situation.
